Bangladesh beat a second-string Sri Lankan side by five wickets in the semi-final of the Asian Games cricket event to seal their place in Friday's final in Guangzhou. They will play Afghanistan - who stunned favourites Pakistan in the first semi-final - in the title match.

Sri Lanka, who had reached the semis after scraping to a two-wicket win over Nepal in the quarters, won the toss and batted. They started positively with the openers Nuwan Zoysa and Jeevantha Kulatunga scoring at more than a run a ball and, at 38 for 1, looked set for a competitive total. However, Kulatunga's dismissal at that point by Shahadat Hossain robbed them of momentum. Suhrawadi Shuvo strangled the Sri Lankan middle order with his left-arm spin, picking up 4 for 6. It was only some late hitting from Chinthaka Jayasinghe, who made 22 with one four and two sixes, that carried them past 100 before they were bowled out for 101.

The total was never going to be enough to challenge the Bangladesh batsmen. Though they lost opener Mithun Ali early, solid contributions from Mohammad Ashraful, Faisal Hossain and Naeem Islam set the base for their chase, Faisal top-scoring with 33. Bangladesh reached their target in just under 16 overs.

The Bangladesh women's team had earlier won the silver medal in the inaugural women's cricket tournament, where they were beaten by the Pakistan women's team in the final and with their men's team reaching the final, Bangladesh have a chance to add a gold medal to their tally. They have currently won just two medals, with a bronze in women's kabaddi, apart from the silver.

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has exclaimed that he struggles to find the superlatives to describe star striker Lionel Messi, and that expects the Argentine star to remain with the club for many beyond his current deal.

Rosell, who spoke to El Mundo Deportivo before he boarded a flight to Qatar, commented on the performance of the Argentine superstar after his deadly double helped defeat Villarreal at the Camp Nou to temporarily move the Blaugrana to the top of the table, before Real Madrid defeated Sporting on Sunday night to move clear again.

Messi is contracted to the Camp Nou giants until 2016, but Rosell believes that he has the capability to be a permanent fixture in the side far beyond the end of his current deal.

He remarked: “I do not know what else to say. There are no words to describe what Leo does. I think he will stay with the club much further than the end of his current deal. He deserves all the praise he receives, and all the interviews.”

Messi joined up with his Argentina colleagues as they prepare to face Brazil in an international friendly, and had earlier told FIFA.com that he hopes either Xavi or Andres Iniesta win the Ballon d'Or, because “they deserve it more than anyone else".

Ahead of the prestigious international against England at Wembley on Wednesday, Nick Bidwell caught up with the great Zinedine Zidane to ask the questions that matter on the future of Les Bleus.Is Laurent Blanc the right man to revive France's flagging fortunes?
I always was convinced Laurent Blanc was the right man to take charge of our national team. After the disastrous events in South Africa, we had to wipe the slate completely clean and I can think of no one better to make a success of the rebuilding process. He's a proper coach, insists on playing attacking football and is a natural leader.What qualities do you most admire in Blanc?
He has this authority that people respect and players respond in the right way to him. In my old French side, 'Lolo' (Blanc's nickname) and Didier Deschamps effectively were the guys who set the tone, who made sure everyone was on the same page and stayed focused. Blanc is so calm and cares deeply about the French and he will not put up with half-measures and those who aren't as hungry as him.How difficult will it be for France to bounce back after the World Cup humiliation in South Africa?
It was always going to be tough, but the first task was to get the side winning again and 'Lolo' has done that. I think he's doing a great job in bringing the squad closer together, encouraging the guys to be more responsible and to see the big picture. He has got the balance just right. As an ex-player, I normally support professionals 100%, but not in this instance. They had their grievances, but it should never have got to the stage of boycotting training. There's no point pretending that the image of our game did not take a real beating.How big a role do the supporters have in the revival of the French national team?It was clear for some time that the national team and its coach were very unpopular. When your own fans whistle and jeer, then you have a big problem. The pressure grew, the players felt more and more isolated and, in the end, they became too fearful and inhibited. Now the fans are right behind the team again and that makes a great deal of difference, I assure you.What are your thoughts on the new faces in the France team that will take on England at Wembley?I'm delighted to see how well new players such as Loic Remy, Dimitri Payet, Adil Rami and Yann M'Vila have performed. To kick off our new football look-a-likes section we've started with perhaps the World's most recogniseable footballer at the moment - Ronaldinho.
Our Football Chat columnist Piranhafish recently stated that he thought Ronaldinho had more than a passing resemblance to "the tall girl out of Saved By The Bell who went on to play the pole dancer in some hyped up soft porn flick that I can't remember the name of".

This started us thinking, and yes there is a resemblance to her, (although I know which one I'd rather wake up next to). So, in the interests of modern science we've decided to put the latest photo technology to the test to get a definitive look-a-like.

We took the photo's to our lab at Football England H.Q. and allowed our boffins to experiment with the two pictures. We got a decidedly disturbing outcome.
When we took the photo of Ronaldinho with the ball on his back and merged it with the other one we got Charles Laughton as the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Miroslav Klose is the man who saves his best for the world stage. Impotent for Bayern Munich over the course of this past season, the striker flicked the switch in Germany's opening group game against Australia, scoring his 11th goal at World Cup finals to close in on the Brazilian Ronaldo's record of 15. Onwards and upwards, everyone predicted, with Germany widely fancied. Yet he and his team were stopped brutally in their tracks here. Klose's red card was one of those moments that had eyes widening and mouths opening all around the stadium. Already on a booking for a trip on Branislav Ivanovic, as the Serb had burst out of defence, Klose's challenge on Dejan Stankovic was nothing more than a nibble at ankles. Yes, it was a foul, but a second yellow card? Stankovic was not about to spark a Serbian attack and there was certainly nothing nasty in Klose's intent. But you knew that the referee Alberto Undiano was going to do it by the way that he rushed in. The Spaniard had possibly made a rod for his own back by dishing out five yellow cards in the first 32 minutes but his application of the strictest letter of the law drew gasps. The Germany players, it ought to be said, were commendably restrained in their protests. What will they make of the decision at the referees' headquarters in Pretoria? Each of the four-strong teams of officials from the various nations are based there and, after every performance, there is an extensive debrief involving them all. Could it be that the furore over Cristiano Ronaldo's call for greater protection had an influence? The consensus here was that if Klose's second card were merited, football would be entering the realms of non-contact sports. Anyone for netball? The World Cup had so far been notable for an absence of controversy. Undiano appeared keen to compensate and, as he continued to keep the whistle to his lips in the second half, so the blood pressure of the Germany manager, Joachim Löw, rose. At full time, Löw marched straight off down the tunnel, gesturing angrily. The dismissal shaped the game, although it should not detract from an encouraging performance from Serbia, whose football was compact, committed and laced with no little enterprise. Their three starting midfielders held a narrow line, with the captain, Stankovic, in the middle, ever available for the short ball out of defence. On the flanks, Milos Krasic and the new Liverpool signing Milan Jovanovic impressed, Krasic particularly so. The CSKA Moscow winger is a summer transfer target for Juventus and he would have added to his value. His crosses and trickery were a delight. Serbia sometimes offer the impression that their finger is never far from the self-destruct button. The vital penalty that Zdravko Kuzmanovic conceded for handball in their opening game defeat against Ghana was utterly needless and Nemanja Vidic, inexplicably, aped his team-mate to concede another one. Mercifully for Serbia, Vladimir Stojkovic saved Lukas Podolski's 60th minute kick. Germany showed great character with 10 men and Löw the boldness to chase the game with attacking substitutions. But his players, as they diced with conceding a second on the counter, could not fashion the equaliser. Löw was keen not to turn his team's final group game, against Ghana on Wednesday, into a drama. Thanks in part to Undiano, he has been denied his wish.

Host South Africa left all-time top scorer Benni McCarthy out of its World Cup squad on deadline day Tuesday while Gareth Barry hoped that good news from a fitness checkup would put him among England's 23. His match figures of 1-55 from 9 overs were unflattering but his last over was exceptional. Thanks to a superb 8th-wicket stand between Harbhajan and Praveen Kumar, India had come close needing 42 from the last 3 overs. Harbhajan and Praveen Kumar managed 33 of those runs from the first 2 overs as Siddle conceded 13 and Watson conceded 20 in the 48th and 49th over respectively. With Brett Lee unable to bowl due to a sore elbow and Mitchell Johnson having completed his quota of 10 overs, the onus was on Siddle to restrict the onslaught. Siddle bowled a length ball first up which Praveen Kumar failed to dispatch to the boundary even though it was on his pads. The next one was on target and Harbhajan's stumps were shattered as he played an ugly swipe across the line. Australia hold nerve to edge India in thriller

Praveen Kumar and Harbhajan Singh's batting heroics took India agonisingly close to a sensational win before the hosts slumped to a four-run defeat against Australia in the first match of the seven-ODI cricket series.

At 201 for seven in their pursuit of a 293-run victory target, India seemed heading for a comprehensive defeat before Praveen (40 not out) and Harbhajan (49) came up with a defiant 84-run stand off just 57 balls for the eighth wicket that nearly took them home.

Much to the disappointment of the crowd, India managed 288 for eight falling 5 runs short of the target.

A solid 68 from Gautam Gambhir, complemented by cameos from Kohli and Dhoni had put India well on course towards a victory. However quick wickets during the batting powerplay reduced the team to 201/7 with 10 overs remaining. Harbhajan and Praveen then brought down the target to 30 from the last 15 balls and then nine from the last six.

But once Harbhajan departed, India lost the momentum and Australia stopped the hosts four runs short of their total.

Earlier, Ricky Ponting (74) led from the front and was amply supported by Man of the Match Mike Hussey (73), Tim Paine (50) and Cameron White (51) as the visitors rattled up 292 for eight after opting to bat first on a featherbed track.

Faced with the daunting task of scoring at 5.86 per over, the star-studded Indian line-up came a cropper against some disciplined bowling and tight fielding.

Earlier in the innings, Gambhir played the sheet-anchor's role after the cheap dismissal of openers Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar to topscore with 68 off 85 balls with six fours and a six in it.

Harbhajan and Praveen kept the hosts in the hunt with some lusty hits to raise visions of a come-from-behind victory, but in the end it proved of no avail.

With this win, Australia surged to their second successive victory at this venue over the home team, having beaten the hosts by nine wickets in 2007 at this very ground.

Though India came close, their top-order batting, bowling as well as fielding were thoroughly exposed by the Australian team which is riding on a high after whipping England 6-1 and then retaining the Champions Trophy in South Africa.

In the morning, the Australia top-order took a heavy toll of the listless Indian bowling attack to raise a big total. Although Australia suffered an early blow, when Watson fell off the eighth ball, a superb partnership worth nearly a hundred between Ponting and Paine helped the team back on track.

The sound beginning was built upon by half-centuries from White and Hussey as the Indian bowling, which has struggled of late, was put to the sword in merciless fashion.

The Indian chase began in style with Virender Sehwag hitting Lee's first two deliveries for successive boundaries. But the bowler had the last laugh by getting rid if the DelLee eventually settled score by getting rid off Sehwag by having the batsman caught for 13 in 11 balls.

India lost another big wicket when Sachin Tendulkar drove a wide ball from Watson up into a packed off-side field and Ponting took a blinder at short cover-point.

Virat Kohli, playing in company of Gambhir, steadied the innings with a stand of 58 in 75 balls and the pair raised the 100 in the 19th over when Kohli fell to Adam Voges.

Gambhir and Dhoni then strung a partnership of 64 runs with diligence for the fourth wicket before Mitchell Johnson first removed the left-hander and then took a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Suresh Raina. which left India at 183 for five in the 37th over.

It was left to Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja to guide India home but the skipper got out soon, trying to loft Watson and giving a tame catch to Lee at mid on.

For Australia, Johnson led the bowling with two for 59, while Watson secured 2 for 70. Surprisingly brett Lee was only given 6 overs to bowl during which he gave away 28 runs while picking up the key wicket of Sehwag.

The thrilling victory put the visitors 1-0 up in the series ahead of the second day/night encounter at Nagpur on October 28.

Nadal Falls to Cilic in China Open Semifinal

Marin Cilic upset second-ranked Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the China Open on Saturday in Beijing.

The eighth-seeded Cilic cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Nadal, setting up a final against Novak Djokovic, who defeated Robin Soderling, 6-3, 6-3.

In the women’s draw, Svetlana Kuznetsova beat her Russian compatriot Nadia Petrova, 6-1, 6-3, to reach the final against Agnieszka Radwanska, who beat Marion Bartoli, 6-4, 6-3.

Cilic broke Nadal’s serve twice, racing to a 5-0 lead. Nadal struggled to respond to the 21-year-old Cilic’s booming serve and aggressive returns. Cilic had six aces in the first set, with a first-serve percentage of 83 percent.

He continued to baffle Nadal in the second set, breaking serve in the first game and again in the sixth, wrecking Nadal’s timing and outpacing him with his groundstrokes.

“From the beginning of the match until the end I didn’t let my level of play drop and definitely I came into the match really good,” Cilic said. “I was aggressive when I had to be.

The best thing I did today: I didn’t back off, I was just stubborn with my style of play.”

Cilic has lost all three of his previous matches against Djokovic.

Nadal said he had felt under the gun throughout the match.

“He was serving unbelievably, and his returning was very fast and playing winners all the time,” Nadal said. “The worst thing for me was that when I had a little bit of a chance to come back to the match, I didn’t play very well, either.

“If you’re losing, 6-1, 6-3, there are a lot of things you’re doing wrong in that match. I can accept to win, I can accept to lose, but 6-1, 6-3 is — mentally, I probably wasn’t there.”

Djokovic broke Soderling in the first game and, after double-faulting on deuce at 4-3, fired three consecutive aces to hold serve and won the set.

“I assure you that it was a lot more difficult because he’s a big server, a big hitter, and he was very aggressive throughout the whole match,” said Djokovic, ranked No. 2 in the world. “So I was very patient and I waited for my chances that were given to me, and I used them at the right time.”

Kuznetsova had little difficulty dispatching Petrova, who had ground through three-set battles with Serena Williams and Peng Shuai to get to the semifinals.

“I tried to move her around. I knew it was her weakness,” said the sixth-seeded Kuznetsova, winner of the 2006 China Open said of Petrova.

DAVIS CUP FINAL IN BARCELONA The Davis Cup final between defending champion Spain and the Czech Republic will be played in Barcelona.

The Spanish tennis federation announced on Saturday that the best-of-five series scheduled for Dec. 4-6 would be held on the clay courts at Palau Sant Jordi.

The choice was made after the International Tennis Federation rejected Tenerife in the Canary Islands and the southern port city of Malaga because they were open-air courts. Malaga’s stadium also fell under the minimum seating capacity of 12,000.

Internationals Look to Upset U.S. in Presidents Cup

Since its inception in 1994, the biennial Presidents Cup competition, which matches a team of 12 golfers from the United States against a dozen from an International team, has been as lopsided as a broken jaw. That has been the figurative parting gift for International teams, which have not won since 1998.

The familiar winning formula — jump to an early lead in opening-day foursomes and ride it to victory — has worked well in the United States team’s 5-1-1 domination. And by most statistical formulations, the Americans are an overwhelming favorite to continue their mastery when the two sides meet in the eighth Presidents Cup starting Thursday at Harding Park Golf Course.

Eight players from the United States team that defeated the favored European team in the 2008 Ryder Cup are on the squad. Tiger Woods, who missed that Ryder Cup while recovering from knee surgery, is on form. Phil Mickelson is coming off a win two weeks ago in the Tour Championship. And eight members of the team have won this year.

But could a Presidents Cup change be riding in like the fog that slithered ashore off the San Francisco Bay on Wednesday afternoon? Some feel strongly that it can. The International team captain, Greg Norman, has been telling his team all week that it can, and some of his confidence seems to be rubbing off.

“If you see our team get out front early, they could be dangerous,” said the International team assistant captain, Frank Nobilo, a three-time Presidents Cup competitor. “If we can get out to a quick start, it could be the confidence boost we need.”

The Presidents Cup lacks the pressure, the history and the extraordinarily intense rivalry of the Ryder Cup, which was first played in 1927. But the International team appears ready to at least ratchet up the intensity. Even the Colombian “rookie” on this year’s team, Camilo Villegas, got into the act this week, talking about wanting to turn the tide.

The only team match-play experience Villegas, 27, has had came in college at theUniversity of Florida and in the South American Championship in which he played for Colombia. But he has been inspired by the camaraderie this week and looks forward to playing for all of South America when he teams with the reigning Masters champion,Ángel Cabrera of Argentina, against Kenny Perry and Zach Johnson in foursomes on Thursday.

“I walk in my room Sunday night, I look at all of the uniforms, and all of a sudden it’s memories of kind of college golf and the South American Championship,” Villegas said. “And trust me, I’ve got a lot of good memories. So I think it’s time to step it up and add some more good memories about team golf and team competition.

“It’s a new year, it’s a new tournament,” Villegas said. “Why are we going to keep thinking about the past? You know what, there’s going to be a lot of people rooting for us, and we will be giving our best to play as good as we can and have a good outcome and keep growing the game of golf in South America, keep motivating those kids that are coming up.”

Among other intangibles that could align for the International team: the golf course, Harding Park, is a compact, classic layout that is familiar to most of the International players. And San Francisco has a huge international population that could lessen the home-course advantage for the United States.

The three International rookies, Villegas, Y. E. Yang and the 18-year-old phenom Ryo Ishikawa, do not have any of the scar tissue from losing in match play. Ishikawa has been practicing well and will go under the gun early in foursomes paired with Geoff Ogilvy and playing against Woods and Steve Stricker.

Far from being cowed by the pairing, Ishikawa said he was looking forward to playing against Woods. Yang, who defeated Woods down the stretch at the P.G.A. Championship at Hazeltine in August, has also practiced well this week. He and Retief Goosen will take on Jim Furyk and Justin Leonard.

Relaxed and ready, the United States team has been enjoying itself all week, bonding in the team room, playing table tennis and pool and hanging out with the honorary assistant captain, Michael Jordan, the golf fanatic and retired N.B.A. star who was recruited by the team’s captain, Fred Couples.

Whether the relaxed United States team can keep its edge against a fired-up International squad, whether it can come out and blitz the Internationals in the foursomes as it did in 2007 at Montreal — when it went out to a 5 ½- ½ lead on Day 1 and won the Saturday foursomes, 5-0 — will go a long way toward telling whether it can keep its winning streak alive.

For Obama, Golfing Is a Very Leisurely Pursuit

And President Obama?

Long, slow rounds. A lot of time hunting for balls in the woods. All dished up with a dollop of trash-talking.

The First Golfer brought his duffer’s game to Martha’s Vineyard this week. By Thursday, Mr. Obama had logged three golf games in four days, appearing at one island course after another. He spent five hours on Monday afternoon playing 18 holes at the Farm Neck Golf Club here, two and a half hours on Tuesday playing nine holes at Mink Meadows Golf Club in Vineyard Haven, and several hours playing Thursday afternoon at the Vineyard Golf Club in Edgartown.

While Mr. Obama has indulged in other vacation activities — he took his family bike riding Thursday morning, went to the beach on Wednesday and took his wife to dinner Tuesday night — golf has been the only recurring one.

So, clearly, the president likes to hit the links. But is he any good at it, especially compared with his predecessors?

“His golf games are long because he’s not very good,” said Don Van Natta Jr., a reporter for The New York Times who wrote “First Off the Tee: Presidential Hackers, Duffers and Cheaters From Taft to Bush” (PublicAffairs, 2003).

Unlike Mr. Clinton, who had a reputation for shaving strokes off his score, Mr. Obama “doesn’t fudge his scores,” Mr. Van Natta said, adding: “If he shoots an 11 on a hole, he will write down 11.” (Mr. Obama shoots in the 90s on a good day, Mr. Van Natta said.)

White House officials, trying to protect their boss from guffaws, refuse to divulge Mr. Obama’s scores. The president himself envelops his golf game in a cloak of secrecy. Unlike the drill with many of his predecessors, who allowed reporters to watch them play the first hole, and then return to the 18th to watch the grand finish, the White House press pool covering Mr. Obama is kept far away from the action.

“The verdant entry to the entry road to the entrance of the Vineyard Golf Club is as close as we get to Potus right now, colleagues,” Elizabeth Williamson of The Wall Street Journal wrote Thursday in the report on the president’s activities that she shared with other White House reporters.

(Much to the disappointment of the press corps, reports that there might be a vacation game with Tiger Woods look to be false.)

The official word on Thursday from the White House deputy spokesman, Bill Burton, was that Mr. Obama has been enjoying his golf game.

But some White House aides — who, to be fair, were not on the golf course with the president on Thursday — said that those who were there mentioned a lot of trash-talking coming from the First Mouth, despite his less-than-Masters-level play. Mr. Obama, whose first sports love is basketball, took up golf seriously in 1997, when he was in the Illinois State Senate. It has been a love affair ever since, and Mr. Obama is now the 15th of the last 18 presidents to play golf, Mr. Van Natta said. “The only nongolfers since Taft are Carter, Hoover and Truman,” he said.

Mr. Obama is notorious for dragging his staff members onto the golf course with him, including the White House trip director, Marvin Nicholson; the White House spokesman,Robert Gibbs; and Ben Finkenbinder, the baby-faced press aide who also happened to play golf at Macalester College in St. Paul, when he was studying there a mere two years ago. On Martha’s Vineyard this week, Mr. Obama was playing with Mssrs. Nicholson and Finkenbinder, along with the chief executive of UBS, Robert Wolf; and Eric Whitaker, a Chicago pal.

This is the first summer vacation that the Obama family has taken with the White House press pool on hand to chronicle Mr. Obama’s every move, and therefore, the first vacation providing an opportunity to get a handle on Mr. Obama’s golf scores. Alas, White House officials continued their veil of secrecy, and would not say. Which means he is probably still in the 90s, respectable for a weekend golfer.

Kerr questions Liberty National critics

LPGA golfer Christie Kerr member at Liberty National. What did you think of the bashing it took from the PGA Tour players during The Barclays? It sounded like a lot of them hated it.

Liberty is a first-rate facility. You can’t beat the views. The layout of the course is fantastic…The Firemans are very good friends of mine.

I think [the course] was [criticized] because it was set apart and [the PGA players] are used to being able to shoot 8-under every day. I happen to love the layout of the course. I think there are some changes that Dan and Paul Fireman know they have to make, like the 7th green not running away so much and some bunkers here and there. I think the spirit of the course and the way it plays are tough. And I think the guys weren’t used to having to pitch out of the rough; they weren’t used to a 7-iron releasing 8 to 10 yards. In that sense, it’s easy for a lot of players to bash the course.

The guys are just used to shooting nothing at a golf course and that’s not how the Firemans and Liberty wanted it to play. They wanted it to play like a major championship course, so that’s how they set it up — the rough was up, the greens were fast. Those are the best male golfers in the world and I think they can handle that.

Gary Player said it best: lt’s like going into somebody’s house, eating their dinner, talking to their family, and then insulting the wife’s cooking, the house, the decor, telling them the food was terrible — you just don’t go to some place and do that. [Ed. note: Yikes!]

If there are things you don’t like, then so be it; everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But some of the best golfers in the world had really good things to say, like Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els — they’re major champions.

What do you think about the LPGA players posing for ESPN Magazine’s “Body” Issue? Do you think it’s good or bad for women’s golf?

I got interviewed for [the article]. But I didn’t get a good look at it. You can take the positon of it being good or bad. I think we definitely need the exposure; we need good, positive PR. I think it was done tastefully from what everyone was telling me, so I think that’s good for the LPGA. I think that’s why they did the article because it’s controversial; it creates a lot of buzz in the media marketplace.

What do you see for the future of the LPGA? Do they need to do a better job marketing the players? Like the Asians, for example?

Well, I think it’s the responsibility of the organization to market the players. [They should] do vignettes, stories and let the fans know who the players are and get to know them. A lot of the Korean and Japanese players they do so much for charity and you know, they need to build those stories up — just as they do for my foundation, for instance. I think the future of the LPGA relies on restructuring the organization, getting the new commissioner in place that’s going to be able to take us to the next level and from there, focus on marketing and PR.

You know, the telecasts are a big thing for us. There are rain delays and no one wants to see last year’s tournament. They should do stories on the players — like Katherine Hull for instance, she’s a very avid surfer and into charity — why not build that up?

When you said, “take [the LPGA] to the next level,” what do you mean by that?

I think it’s just the total package because we’re playing as good as we’ve ever played and we probably have the most undervalued product in the sports marketplace right now. [We need to] get our play to match up with the TV, the marketing and PR. It’s going to get to a point where it tips, and that’s where we need to get to. Give us 3 years.

Rory McIlroy Not Joining PGA Tour In '10

Rory McIlroy, the 20-year-old dubbed by the golf world as the next big international player, will not join the PGA Tour next season, refuting recent speculation that he would play the majority of his schedule in the U.S. in '10. “Rory has decided not to join the PGA Tour in 2010,” his agent, ISM’s Chubby Chandler, said in an e-mail. He did not provide any further explanation. The London Daily Mail reported late last week that McIlroy would officially announce his intention to join the PGA Tour in mid-November before the start of the European Tour’s Dubai World Championship. McIlroy revealed this summer that he turned down a special exemption to play on the PGA Tour in '09, saying he was concerned of playing in too many events. His finishes this year will qualify him to play in all four majors and World Golf Championships, and he is expected to receive sponsor exemptions to play in up to seven more events on the PGA Tour. McIlroy is second in the European Tour money rankings and ranks 17th in the world golf rankings. He played in six PGA Tour events in '09, including all four majors, carding a top 10 at the U.S. Open and finishing tied for third at the PGA Championship.

Weir looking to extend mastery at Frys.com Open

he Frys.com Open has camped at Grayhawk Golf Course until its home course in California is ready. Mike Weir has heard good things about the event's future home at the Institute Golf Course in Morgan Hill, Calif. But after winning the inaugural Frys.com Open in 2007 and finishing in a fourth-place tie last year, Weir is happy the tournament has at least one more year in the desert. "You still hate to see it leave here," Weir said on Wednesday. "I love coming here." Two years ago, Weir joined dozens of Canadian fans for an impromptu toast outside the media center after his one-stroke victory over Mark Hensby. Weir celebrated his first tour victory in three years - and he hasn't won since. "It's been a little bit of a drought again," said Weir, whose best finishes this season were third in the Bob Hope Classic in January and second at Pebble Beach the following month. This is the third year the Frys.com Open has been played on the par-70, 7,125-yard Raptor Course as part of the PGA Tour's Fall Series. Victories and earnings in the five fall events count on tour records and in the world golf rankings. There's a $5 million purse, with the winner taking home $900,000. Scottsdale is one of only two cities, along with Orlando, that hosts two PGA tour events. In February, TPC Scottsdale is home to the FBR Open, the tour's most heavily attended tournament. But the struggling economy has put a squeeze on Scottsdale's two events. The FBR Open, formerly called the Phoenix Open, is seeking a new sponsor after FBR announced it would not renew its deal after 2010. Meanwhile, the Frys.com Open is "year-to-year" at Grayhawk, tournament director Scott Reid said. The Institute won't be ready to host the event in 2010, he said, and organizers will consider other cities as potential hosts. "I think that Grayhawk would continue to host this event if we wanted to stay," Reid said. "But I think we're just kind of going to evaluate the opportunities that might be in another market that doesn't have a PGA Tour event already." The Frys.com Open drew 35,450 last year, up about 8,000 from its first year as word spread about the event. The Frys.com Open doesn't draw the same partying throngs as the FBR Open, but that can be a bonus for golf fans. "We feel like we're more of a true golf-fans event," Reid said. "It's more about the golf tournament, seeing the players and seeing the golf than it is about being seen." This year's tournament has attracted some big names in the field of 132, including Fred Couples, David Duval and Justin Leonard. Some golfers, like Couples, Tom Lehman and Tim Clark, are playing because the course is in their neighborhood. "They can sleep in their own bed and still play for a $5 million pursue," Reid said. For others, the tourney represents a chance to move up on the money list. "You've still got stuff to play for," Clark said. "A win is big. It does a lot for you." Just ask defending champion Cameron Beckman. Beckman entered last year's Frys.com Open ranked 176th on the money list and 447th in the world. He had skipped eight weeks because of back problems and was in danger of losing his tour card. But Beckman defeated Kevin Sutherland on the second playoff hole to earn his second career victory. Beckman's only other tour win had come in 2001, in the Southern Farm Bureau Classic. In between victories, Beckman had to go back to Q school twice. Thanks to his victory here last year, Beckman has an exemption through 2010. "I went through some tour schools in between (victories) and had some rough years," the 39-year-old Beckman said. "For some of us, if you're not playing well, you're trying to keep a job."

Howard, Werth power Phillies to second straight NL pennant

Ryan Howard and the defending champs are back in the World Series -- proving last year was no fluke and looking even more dangerous this time around. Jayson Werth homered twice, Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz also connected and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-4 in Game 5 on Wednesday night to win their second straight NL pennant. Brad Lidge closed it out, Howard was selected NL championship series MVP and the Phillies became the first team to reach consecutive World Series since the New York Yankees in 2000-01. "I can get used to it," manager Charlie Manuel told a cheering crowd. "We got one more step and we're going to get it!" Now, Jimmy Rollins and crew wait for their next opponent. They'll go for their third World Series title beginning next Wednesday night at New York or Los Angeles. Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo thinks Barcelona striker Lionel Messi could succeed him as the best player in Europe by winning the Golden Ball award.

The Portugal winger, who joined Madrid from Manchester United during the offseason, said Tuesday in an interview with France Football magazine that Barcelona players have the best chances to win the prestigious trophy this year.

“Messi is the favorite,” Ronaldo said. “Why not him? If he wins it, it will be well deserved.”

Six players from Spanish and European champion Barcelona are chasing the Golden Ball, whose list of nominations was released last week and included Messi, Xavi Hernandez, Thierry Henry, Andres Iniesta, Yaya Toure and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Ronaldo has also been selected. The winner will be announced on Dec. 1.

“The favorite is a player from Barcelona,” Ronaldo said. “To win a trophy like this, you need to have won collective trophies, a league title, the Champions League. That’s why many players from Barcelona could win it.”

Restricted to players in Europe, the Golden Ball winner is decided by an annual poll of soccer journalists compiled by the magazine.

Ronaldo also admitted that Barcelona was better than Real Madrid.

“But why? Because they are playing together for several seasons,” the Portugal winger said. “Not just for two months like us. We respect Barcelona but let’s wait until the end (of the season).”

A busy round of World Cup qualifiers last week caused France’s Thierry Henry to be ruled out with a thigh strain, while Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed Saturday’s 0-0 draw in Valencia with a bruised knee.

“We spoke with the doctors and thought it best to be cautious (with Ibrahimovic),” Barca coach Pep Guardiola said after Saturday’s La Liga clash.

He was in a lot of pain. We’ll have to see if we can get him back for Tuesday.”

Ibrahimovic trained apart from the squad on Sunday, along with Seydou Keita, Eric Abidal and Pedro who all finished the bruising encounter in Valencia with knocks.

Lionel Messi completed the full 90 minutes in the Mestalla despite having played two emotionally draining qualifiers with Argentina last week and looked well below par.

“It is normal that sometimes you have off days,” midfielder Keita said of Messi on Sunday. “The team weren’t at their best either (against Valencia), but he remains one of our best players.”

NOTHING TO LOSE

The Spanish league leaders have Bojan Krkic back after injury and Guardiola could draft him in to the attack if Ibrahimovic is not fit in time.

Barca also top their Champions League group with four points from two games, and host a Rubin Kazan side who will have been lifted after claiming their first point in Europe’s elite club competition last time out.

The Russians held Italian giants Inter Milan to a 1-1 draw in Kazan last month and coach Kurban Berdyev was confident this result would help his side.

“We are playing Barcelona, the best team in the world, so we have nothing to lose and a lot to gain from the match,” he was was quoted as telling local media.

Berdyev rested a number of key players for their 2-1 league win over struggling FC Khimki on Saturday, but suffered a scare when Russia striker Alexander Bukharov left the pitch after just three minutes with a leg injury.

“Thank God his leg is not broken and I hope he’ll be ready in time for Barcelona,” Berdyev said.

South African midfielder Macbeth Sibaya is suspended.

Man City boss plays down Robinho`s Barca talk

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes insists Robinho still has a future at Eastlands despite the Brazil forward’s reported admission that he would love to join Barcelona.

Robinho is currently sidelined with an ankle injury but he fuelled speculation of a January move to the Nou Camp when he was quoted this week saying that it would be a dream to play for Barca.

It is not the first time Robinho has been linked with a move since joining City from Real Madrid in 2008.

But Hughes said on Friday: “There is always speculation and noise surrounding Robinho. That has been the case since he came to the club.

“He is a great guy. We are not in the process of taking outstanding players out of the team.

“We want to complement the outstanding players at the club. We are looking to build, not dismantle.”

Hughes also revealed Robinho could make his comeback in the League Cup match against Scunthorpe in two weeks.

“The only frustration he has at the moment is that he is not fit and well,” Hughes said.

“I hope that will be resolved in the next week to 10 days, and he will be back on the pitch.”

Wenger slams Ridgewell over Walcott injury

Arsene Wenger has slammed Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell for the tackle which left Arsenal winger Theo Walcott nursing a potentially serious knee injury.

Walcott was forced off before half-time in the Gunners’ 3-1 win over City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday following a hefty tackle from Ridgewell.

The England international was left in a crumpled heap after the defender crashed into him, winning the ball but also crunching into the back of his legs.

Walcott played on for another 20 minutes before being withdrawn and will undergo a scan on Sunday to determine the extent of the injury.

Wenger has ruled out the possibility of cruciate ligament damage but fears Walcott might have twisted his medial ligaments, which would rule him out of Tuesday’s Champions League game with AZ Alkmaar and could leave him facing several weeks on the sidelines.

“He has a bruised knee and it’s swollen,” Wenger said. “It’s difficult to assess and know whether it is a twisted medial ligament or just a kick. He said he was unstable when he was running which is not good news.

“We will assess on Sunday morning when he will have a scan – if it’s just a kick then he should he available for Tuesday, if it’s a twist then he won’t be. I believe, personally, he will not be available for Tuesday, at least.

“It was a cut-through tackle, without any restriction. It was meant to impress. It looked quick and hard from outside – I don’t know if he didn’t want to play the ball.”

The incident was a grim echo of the last occasion these sides met, when Arsenal striker Eduardo suffered a compound fracture of his leg following a tackle by Martin Taylor.

That said, the implications for Walcott should not be nearly as severe as they were for the Croatia striker, and Birmingham manager Alex McLeish was justified in pointing out that the referee, Lee Probert, did not even see fit to award a free-kick for Ridgewell’s tackle.

Arsenal’s sensitivities were doubtless heightened by the memory of what happened after that infamous meeting with Birmingham in 2008, when their title challenge imploded.

But Wenger was understandably heartened by his side stretching their winning streak to seven games in all competitions.

The north Londoners were in control from the 16th minute, Robin van Persie collecting Alex Song’s pass and whipping a shot into the far corner, and when Abou Diaby doubled the advantage moments later, Birmingham appeared set for a long day.

But they were handed an unexpected lifeline when Vito Mannone, the young Italian goalkeeper, inexplicably flapped at a high ball and Lee Bowyer volleyed in.

Wenger was unimpressed with both that error, hinting afterwards that Manuel Almunia could win back his starting place against Alkmaar.

The killer blow was finally applied in the 84th minute, when Andrey Arshavin curled in a low shot following a swift counter-attack.

“We were cruising and in control at two goals,” he said. “We were wondering who would score the third but we started making mistakes. We didn’t have the same fluency, control or pace in the second half.”

McLeish issued a warning to his own side after this latest defeat, suggesting that they could be running out of chances to impress before the opening of the winter transfer window.

“We need to find that cutting edge and we are looking for our match winners to play consistently well,” said the Scot, who is expected to be handed 40 million pounds to spend by City’s new owner Carson Yeung.

Manchester United returned to the top with a really nervy win overBolton. After taking a two goal lead they switched off and Bolton laid siege on their goal and very nearly took a point. However, the champions picked up three points.

Meanwhile, Chelsea took the lead at top four wannabees Aston Villa through the enigma that is Didier Drogba but then threw it away and lost 2-1.

Two man

Liverpool lost at Sunderland when Darren Bent’s shot was deflected in off a beach ball thrown onto the pitch by a Liverpool fan. That really is some sort of own goal. Are Liverpool a two man team and not able to play if Gerrard and Torres are missing?

The final member of the big four did get a comfortable win. Arsenal saw off Birmingham 3-1 despite not playing anywhere near their fluent best.

Misery

The other top four wannabees Tottenham heaped more misery on bottom club Portsmouth. In a highly charged game both teams had a player sent off but Tottenham eased to a 2-1 win.

If Manchester City win at Wigan today they will knock Arsenal out of the top four and will join Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United. Liverpool have slipped to eighth place and are behind Sunderland and Aston Villa.

Trouble

At the bottom, Portsmouth are clearly in trouble but the likes of Wolves got a draw at Everton and Bolton nearly shocked Manchester United.

Whilst it may well turn out to be a four horse race at the top and the bottom of the Premier League in the end, at the moment it looks absolutely wide open and that has to be a really good thing.

Thrilled

At this stage I would think Manchester United are absolutely thrilled to be top after playing really quite poorly in many of their games. Chelsea will be a little concerned after two away defeats in a row. Arsenal will be feeling pretty confident as they have done well apart from two pretty unfortunate defeats in Manchester, or ‘accidents’ as Arsene Wenger called them. Liverpool are in mid-table and have lost four games already. That’s twice as many as they lost in the whole of last season.

Manchester City and Tottenham and maybe Aston Villa, will think they have a real chance of breaking the top four’s monopoly. As a neutral, I think that’s great.

Mario Bolatti scored amid a goalmouth scramble in the 84th minute, and coach Diego Maradona’s Albiceleste beat Uruguay 1-0 Wednesday night to earn the fourth and final automatic berth from South America.

Maradona repeatedly used profane language to lash out at his critics at the post-match news conference and said Argentina media had treated him “like garbage.” He credited the win to support he received from fans.

“Thanks to my players, today I was consecrated as a coach,” he said defiantly. “We are in the World Cup with full honors.”

Brazil (9-2-7) finished first in South America with 34 points, one ahead of Chile and Paraguay (10-5-3), which had earlier clinched the first three berths from South America.

Argentina (8-6-4), which would have missed its first World Cup since 1970 if it had lost, wound up fourth with 28 points and will go to the tournament for the 10th straight time.

“There’s nothing to celebrate. From Grondona on down, it’s all bad,” forward Juan Sebastian Veron said, a reference to Argentina Football Association president Julio Grondona. “There’s no reason to sweep things under the carpet. We’ve got to huddle and do a lot of talking.”

Uruguay (6-6-6) finished fifth with 24 points and will meet Costa Rica, the No. 4 team from North and Central America and the Caribbean, in a playoff next month for another berth. The first leg is at Costa Rica on Nov. 14, and Uruguay hosts the second leg four days later.

Argentina scored just after Uruguay defender Martin Caceres tripped Veron just outside the penalty area and was ejected for his second yellow card.

SHANGHAI, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Spanish top seed Rafa Nadal overcame stubborn second-set resistance from compatriot Tommy Robredo to reach the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals 6-1 6-4 on Thursday.

Second seed Novak Djokovic again looked impressive as he continued his imperious form in China with a 6-4 6-2 thrashing of German qualifier Rainer Schuettler.

As the debate about the draining effects of the long men’s season continued with Stanislas Wawrinka and Gael Monfils becoming the sixth and seventh players to retire injured from the $3.24 million tournament.

World number two Nadal, still not back at his best after an injury-disrupted second half of the season, cantered through the first set but lost his serve at the start of the second.

The 23-year-old Australian Open champion is nothing if not a fighter, however, and he battled back into the set in a 15-minute third game before breaking again for a 5-4 lead and serving out for victory.

“I am playing well,” Nadal, who next faces Ivan Ljubicic, told reporters. “But I played two terrible games at the start of the second set so I have to improve in situations like this if I want to beat the top players.”

Djokovic, who will move up to number three in the world next week, proved in winning the season-ending Masters Cup here last year that he has the legs to outlast his rivals.

The Serbian won the China Open title last weekend and his victory over Schuettler, which set up a clash with Gilles Simon, was his ninth in a row on Chinese soil.

“It was comfortable,” the 22-year-old said. “I didn’t play the last couple of games of the first set that well, but the important thing is that I played as much as I needed to win.”

BASELINE MOBILITY

Sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko defused Fernando Gonzalez’s serve with his mobility along the baseline to grab a sixth win in six meetings against the Chilean, 6-3 7-5.

“If he has a second serve, I know I have a 90 percent chance to win the point,” said the seemingly indefatigable 28-year-old.

Simon, seeded eighth, was the only one of three Frenchmen to get through the third round after he notched up a 6-3 6-4 win over Czech Tomas Berdych.

Robin Soderling upset error-prone French fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3 6-3 in their encounter under the open roof of the Qizhong central arena.

Soderling is among a handful of players still in with a chance of claiming one of three remaining spots up for grabs at the season-ending World Tour Finals in London next month.

“I know that if I play well, I have a chance, but this tournament won’t decide who’s going to play in London,” said the ninth seeded Swede, who will face Feliciano Lopez on Friday. “There’s still a lot of tennis to be played.”

- Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino will be available for their Champions League Group E clash at Hungary's Debrecen on Oct. 20 after UEFA halved his two-match suspension, the Serie A club said on Monday.

The Italy forward missed last week's 2-0 win over Liverpool, when his replacement Stevan Jovetic scored twice, after being sent off for an elbow in their opening defeat at Olympique Lyon.

He was due to be banned for the Hungary trip as well but the club said in a statement UEFA had partially upheld his appeal.

England striker Wayne Rooney has said he hopes former Manchester United team mate Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal fail to qualify for next year's World Cup in South Africa "It would be nice to see Portugal not there because, in the last two tournaments (World Cup 2006, Euro 2004), they've knocked us out," British newspapers quoted him as saying on Friday before England's penultimate World Cup qualifier in Ukraine. "When we didn't qualify for Euro 2008, we (the United players) got a lot of stick (from Ronaldo)." England have already qualified for the finals in South Africa while Portugal are third in Group One and must win both their remaining matches against Hungary and Malta while hoping Sweden drop points to reach the playoffs. Rooney was sent off against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho in a match that triggered a media backlash against Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward had suggested to the referee that Rooney should be sent off and was then seen to wink at his bench when the official did so. Rooney said he had no doubt that he deserved to be sent off and made clear there were no hard feelings towards Ronaldo, saying the Portuguese had only improved since his move to Real Madrid. "I've watched his first few games for Real Madrid and he seems to have improved again," he said. "He's passing the ball a lot more as well. Cristiano is definitely the best player around."

Australia lock Nathan Sharpe will miss his side's forthcoming tour of the United Kingdom after failing to overcome a shoulder injury.

Sharpe, 31, picked up the injury six weeks ago but it has failed to recover and he will now have an operation. "I gave it as best a shot as I could but it didn't work out," he said. The Wallabies play Tests against England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in consecutive weeks and will name their 35-man squad for the tour on Friday. Sharpe is Australia's number one lock and trained with the team at Sydney's St Ignatius College this week in a bid to prove his fitness.

"I've just been trying to manage it and get it right for this trip," added Sharpe, who picked up the injury in a Test match against New Zealand in August. "There's no point going on a tour like this and being a passenger. I'm only going to let the rest of the guys down." Wallabies coach Robbie Deans conceded that the absence of Sharpe is a blow to his team. "It's obviously an area where we're not over-endowed with depth so it is a blow," said Deans. "It would have been nice to have had him there but it's an opportunity for someone else now."

England have been drawn against India, West Indies and South Africa in their seven-team group for the 2011 Cricket World Cup in the Indian sub-continent. Bangladesh, the Netherlands and Ireland complete Group B, while world champions Australia are in Group A alongside New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Zimbabwe, Canada and Kenya make up the other sides in the 14-team tournament. India will host 29 of the tournament's 49 matches, while Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will share the other 20. Bangladesh capital Dhaka is due to host the opening ceremony on 18 February. Pakistan had been scheduled to host a number of matches, but were stripped of co-hosting rights because of security problems in the country. Fierce rivals India and Pakistan have been kept apart in the group stages, while Australia, who have have won the previous three World Cups, will face neighbours New Zealand, whom they beat by six wickets in the final of the Champions Trophy on Monday. Organisers have revised the format of the tournament following criticism about the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean, with the number of teams cut from 16 to 14 as well as 49 matches in all compared to 51.

The two groups of seven for the 2011 World Cup are also in contrast to the four groups of four before a Super Eight stage in the six-weel long competition in the Caribbean. "We're already certain that it will be shorter. You can be sure that we at the ICC had learnt from past mistakes," said ICC president David Morgan. "I mean there is no doubt that the ICC World Cup in the Caribbean was unsuccessful in some aspects. "We've learnt from that and I think that it's not worthy that we've now staged three highly successful events - 2007 and 2009 - World Twenty20 and now the Champions Trophy in the same years." ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat added: "We're on record as saying that we acknowledged that 2007 might have been longer than desired. So we want to take a week off, if not more."

The schedule for England's defence of the Ashes in Australia during 2010-11 has been finalised. England beat Australia 2-1 in this year's contest and the next five-Test series will start at the Gabba in Brisbane on 25 November. Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney will also play host to Test matches. England will play three warm-up games against first-class opponents before the start of the series and one in-between the second and third Tests. In the 2005-06 series, which Australia won 5-0, England had only one first-class game before the first Test, although they did also play warm-up games against a President's XI and New South Wales.

England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive David Collier said: "The recent Ashes Test series between the two sides was the sporting highlight of the summer and has really whetted the appetite of all cricket supporters as England seek to retain the Ashes next winter." Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland added: "I know we have only just finished an Ashes series in England but I also know that the Aussie players - and Australian cricket in general - are already thinking about the Ashes series down under which starts in just over 12 months.

"Australia has a very good Ashes record at home and I'm hopeful that will continue next summer and we can bring the urn back to Australia."

Maradona may quit Argentina post

Diego Maradona has threatened to quit as coach of the Argentine national team less than a year after taking the post. The 48-year-old will hold talks with Argentine Football Association president Julio Grondona after the coming World Cup qualifiers. "If I continue it will be under my conditions," said Maradona. Argentina lie fifth in their regional standings with two qualifiers remaining and could face a play-off to reach next summer's finals. Maradona has come under pressure following a run of poor results including a 6-1 drubbing by Bolivia in March since succeeding Alfio Basile last November. Three successive defeats by Ecuador, Brazil and Paraguay have left Argentina fifth in the South American standings and in serious danger of failing to qualify for South Africa. Much of the blame has been placed on Maradona, who has been criticised for a perceived lack of team strategy and selection consistency. However, Maradona has said he may quit even if his side make the World Cup finals. "After the qualifiers I will talk to [Grondona]," he said. "Things happened that I didn't like and I will speak about them later."

Although Maradona did not specify his conditions, it is believed that he is unhappy with technical director Carlos Bilardo's interference in team affairs. Local media reports have said the two are barely on speaking terms. Argentina, who last failed to qualify for the World Cup finals in 1970, face Peru on 10 October and Uruguay four days later. Brazil and Paraguay have already qualified, with Chile almost through, but Ecuador, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela and Colombia are all in contention for fourth. The team finishing fifth faces a play-off against the fourth-placed team from the North, Central America and Caribbean region.

New Delhi, Oct 5 (IANS) Bollywood actress and former "Bigg Boss" host Shilpa Shetty is thoroughly enjoying watching megastar Amitabh Bachchan host the third season of the popular reality show.

"I have to mention I enjoyed watching Amit-ji on TV again. I had missed him, and as usual he's doing a great job. His panache is unmatched," Shilpa posted on her blog www.myhotsite.net

"Looking forward to every episode with bated breath -- obviously I have a bias, to see this mix of people will be interesting (and entertaining) to watch," added Shilpa, who hosted the second season of the show in 2008.

Shemaroo Entertainment has announced the release of 3D animation Bal Ganesh 2 on October 23, 2009. This sequel, produced in association with Astute Media Vision, explores the heroic tales of Ganesh's childhood as he battles with wicked and powerful rakshas.

Announcing the launch, Smita Maroo, VP Animation, Shemaroo Entertainment said, "The overwhelming response to Bal Ganesh prompted us to consider a sequel and here it is. We are glad that Bal Ganesh 2 is the first Indian animation release of 2009."

South Korea advanced to the quarter finals of the FIFA Under 20 World Cup in Egypt thanks to three second half goals in a comfortable victory over Paraguay.

Two goals from Kim Min-Woo and a third from Kim Bo-Kyung in fifteen second half minutes were enough to send Korea through as the Albirroja had no response.

Seo Jung-Jin and Min-Woo had first half opportunities to put Korea in front but they failed to take advantage in what was a dull opening 45 minutes. Both sides battled for control but neither managed to assert their dominance and there was little to report from the attacking thirds with just one shot on goal in the entire half.

Korea started the second half as they had ended the first, taking the game to the South Americans and when Joel Silva could only parry Min-Woo's drive, their first effort on target, Bo-Kyung pounced to bag a simple tap-in in front of goal to put Korea republic a goal to the good.

Five minutes later, it was 2-0 thanks to a quick free-kick which set up Min-Woo and he smashed a fine left-footed drive past Silva.

Rodrigo Burgos was then shown a red card after two bookable offences and Paraguay seemed to up their game in his absence with substitute Celso Ortiz smashing an fine free-kick which Kim Seung-Gyu did well to tip over the bar..

Min-Woo put the game beyond all doubt on 70 minutes heading home after fine work down the right channel from Park Hee-Seong. An insurmountable 3-0 lead for South Korea, especially with Paraguay a man down.

That's how it remained for the final 20 minutes as South Korea strode to a comfortable win. They now face the winners of Friday's game between Ghana and South Africa.

LONDON (AP)—England fans will only be able to watch Saturday’s World Cup qualifier in Ukraine on the Internet because TV networks wouldn’t pay for the broadcast rights.

England is already guaranteed a place in South Africa next year, which means interest back home has taken away the game’s importance as far as TV companies are concerned.

Coverage will only be available at a cost on the Internet in Britain, with certain British newspaper Web sites taking the pay-per-view feed.

Odeon cinemas will also air the match, but commercial outlets such as pubs and restaurants won’t be able to show it.

Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson will provide expert analysis for the transmission.

Premier League approves new Portsmouth owner

LONDON (AP)—Saudi Arabian property magnate Ali Al-Faraj was close to finalizing a deal to buy Portsmouth on Monday and can immediately take over as an owner after being approved by the Premier League.

Less than six weeks after buying Portsmouth, owner Sulaiman Al-Fahim was concluding the sale of 90 percent of his stake in the financially troubled club to a consortium led by Al-Faraj, a person close to the talks told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were ongoing.

Al-Faraj passed the league’s “fit and proper persons test” that determines who may own English clubs when he was first trying to buy into Pompey in August.

Al-Fahim, who only took over Portsmouth in late August, has been attempting to refinance the club after banks demanded the television receipts and profits from the last transfer window.

Uncertainty over Al Fahim’s refinancing plans grew last week when players were not paid.

Portsmouth chief executive Pete Storrie has said “there is no money left”.

The squad was promised Thursday they would receive their wages within two days, blaming a cash-flow delay caused by the recent takeover.

Ronaldo expects to play in World Cup qualifier

ISBON, Portugal (AP)—Cristiano Ronaldo believes he will recover from an ankle injury in time for Portugal’s World Cup qualifier against Hungary this weekend.

“I’ve been recovering well, in line with expectations,” the Real Madrid winger said late Monday. “Let’s see how it goes, but I think I’ll be OK by Saturday.”

Ronaldo missed his club’s first defeat of the Spanish season at Sevilla on Sunday after spraining his right ankle in a Champions League game last week.

Portugal team doctor Henrique Jones said he also believes Ronaldo would be ready to play.

“He has a severe ankle sprain and we’ll be taking special care with him, but we think that with the proper treatment he’ll be available for Saturday,” Jones said.

Kuchar wins Turning Stone in playoff

ERONA, N.Y. (AP)—It had been so long since Matt Kuchar had won on the PGA Tour that a huge case of nerves was a given, especially when faced with a sudden-death playoff.

“I had a hard time falling asleep (Sunday night). My mind was racing,” Kuchar said Monday after defeating Vaughn Taylor on the sixth extra hole of the Turning Stone Resort Championship. “I was extremely nervous. It’s a feeling that you don’t feel very often. It’s exciting to feel it. It really makes you feel alive.”

Kuchar rolled in an 18-inch putt for par for the victory, just his second on tour and first in seven years.
